I'LL BE FINE

Mayme woke with her head on Delmar’s arm and wiped the sweat that had formed by the contact of their bodies off her cheek with the rear of her hand. She licked her salty lips, yawned and stretched, then pushed herself up to look at Delmar sleeping, and noticed a small, cream-colored flower in his messy curls. She picked it out, making sand trickle through his hair. She sat up and dangled her legs off the bed, smiling at it. Fine needles adorned its five delicate petals. Delmar lay with a tiny snore gurgling in his throat as he breathed. She placed the miniature blossom on the bed, collected the clothes strewn about the cabin and walked out the back. She boiled water and broke off a chunk of the soap bar, dropping it into the pot with the laundry. Then she oiled her skin to protect it from the scorching rays.

Her thoughts wandered to her next meeting with the kahuna. Still confused with her present task, she used the early morning’s energy, the mana of the sun-yearning trees, to tackle it.

Be all, he had instructed her. The birds had long since woken and teased Mayme with mocking singsong as she sat by the crackling fire. “To be everything, you have to first be yourself. To be yourself, you must know yourself.” Mayme’s gaze turned inwards as she looked for parts of herself she ‘didn’t know.’ Delmar had shown her one, the night before. The memory of it swirled her stomach with butterflies. She heard a creak from the bed inside as he shifted on it.

But, what more was there to discover? She saw a distinction between a part in her that processed ideas and another that had emotions, but there was her body, too, which had its own set of senses. It seemed to lead a life of its own, like the emotional and thinking parts she had discovered earlier.

The prominent sound of a nearby bird mocked her in play—chooooot-choot-choot-choot-choot-choot … choooo-chou, choooo-chou—and others conversed amongst themselves in chirping chit-chat.

But this will not impress the kahuna, she thought. Okay … Each of the three have their own … what? Purpose? Each acts in different situations … When I get angry, my emotional part is acting … But … sometimes they act together. Oh! The parts influence each other. Now we’re getting somewhere … The kahuna wants me to figure out how they interact—

Delmar appeared around the corner. “Good morning, ma puce.” He presented her with the delicate flower she had placed on the bed and a kiss on the forehead in his distinct French manner.
